The pump track is relatively large track, primarily designed for young riders. It is suitable for children of any age from toddlers on balance bikes through to older children. The track is also large enough for adults to use and learn mountain bike skills such as pumping the bike, jumps and manuals.
The concept of a pump track is designed to learn skills and techniques that can be used on larger mountain bike trails such as Swinley Forest or Surrey Hills.
Simply put, pumping is the act of pushing the bike into the trail in some way as you ride to tap into its latent energy. Whether you’re pushing the bike down, forwards or into the side of a turn – it’s all pump. The action of pushing your bike can be done through hands, feet or both.
There is lots of information and videos online about the techniques that can be developed on a pump track, such as this one on the Bike Radar site.
The track was was installed by Richmond Council in 2009 and resurfaced in 2014.
